Chapter 16
The island was extremely large. Flying over it and sitting upon the coast did not give a good sense of the islandâs actual mass. Or maybe it was because I was smaller now. Walking step by step, with these tiny feet of mine, I could measure how big it actually was. It was annoying to get from one side of the island where Carlaâs home was to the ports, located on the opposite side of the island.
When I explained thus, John just patted my back and said, âWelcome to being human. We walk everywhere. Youâll get used to it.â
I didnât want to get used to it. I wanted to fly away.
âSo hereâs the story me and my lovely thought up last night.â
His lovely? I assumed he meant Carla.
âYou are from the small town of Galaway and came to check up on your cousin, Lyra, who had been left here by the dragon she was sacrificed to. Seeing how nice she is faring, you decided to try and make a living here and make sure your dear cousin is taken care of.â He looked at me for confirmation.
âI can remember that, I suppose.â
âGood. Also, we canât go around calling you by the dragonâs name. So we decided on Kenneth. Ken for short. That way, weâll all remember it.â
âDoes everyone know my name here?â
He gave me a shocked look. âOf course! You are the good dragon from the cliffs of Glendale. Son of the ancient one, who loved to gobble fat maidens.â
âDonât say that! What a horrible thing to be remembered for. Poor Thylan!â
âPoor them!â John defended.
True. He shouldnât have been eating maidens in the first place.
âWhereas you just drop the sacrifices here, and not only that, you feed us! Thereâs obviously a vast difference between you and your father. Though Iâm thankful he didnât eat Carla.â He wore a kind smile as he thought of his wife. âIâd be lost without her.â
âWhy?â I was curious.
He gave me a look that said I should know, but I didnât.
âNot only is she kind-hearted and the only woman on this damn island to look my way, sheâs also a beauty and very generous. This island wouldnât have bounced back that fast from the Vikings attack if it wasnât for her. Rather her money.â
I nodded, âThylanâs gold, huh?â
âThatâs right. He left her quite the fortune before he died.â
âYou say this land still struggles? Even with the fish I give?â
John made a hardy laugh, âWell, we are well fed, I must say. But we had to rebuild the huts and houses that the Vikings burned down. After you took care of them, we disassembled their ship for wood to help rebuild, but it takes time. Many men were killed during the attack.â
I must have been giving him a thoughtful look because he looked startled. âWeâll be fine, and youâre here now, so maybe you can help out a bit.â
Well, anyone would want to help out after hearing that story. I planned to do what I
