Chapter 16

The island was extremely large. Flying over it and sitting upon the coast did not give a good sense of the island’s actual mass. Or maybe it was because I was smaller now. Walking step by step, with these tiny feet of mine, I could measure how big it actually was. It was annoying to get from one side of the island where Carla’s home was to the ports, located on the opposite side of the island.

When I explained thus, John just patted my back and said, “Welcome to being human. We walk everywhere. You’ll get used to it.”

I didn’t want to get used to it. I wanted to fly away.

“So here’s the story me and my lovely thought up last night.”

His lovely? I assumed he meant Carla.

“You are from the small town of Galaway and came to check up on your cousin, Lyra, who had been left here by the dragon she was sacrificed to. Seeing how nice she is faring, you decided to try and make a living here and make sure your dear cousin is taken care of.” He looked at me for confirmation.

“I can remember that, I suppose.”

“Good. Also, we can’t go around calling you by the dragon’s name. So we decided on Kenneth. Ken for short. That way, we’ll all remember it.”

“Does everyone know my name here?”

He gave me a shocked look. “Of course! You are the good dragon from the cliffs of Glendale. Son of the ancient one, who loved to gobble fat maidens.”

“Don’t say that! What a horrible thing to be remembered for. Poor Thylan!”

“Poor them!” John defended.

True. He shouldn’t have been eating maidens in the first place.

“Whereas you just drop the sacrifices here, and not only that, you feed us! There’s obviously a vast difference between you and your father. Though I’m thankful he didn’t eat Carla.” He wore a kind smile as he thought of his wife. “I’d be lost without her.”

“Why?” I was curious.

He gave me a look that said I should know, but I didn’t.

“Not only is she kind-hearted and the only woman on this damn island to look my way, she’s also a beauty and very generous. This island wouldn’t have bounced back that fast from the Vikings attack if it wasn’t for her. Rather her money.”

I nodded, “Thylan’s gold, huh?”

“That’s right. He left her quite the fortune before he died.”

“You say this land still struggles? Even with the fish I give?”

John made a hardy laugh, “Well, we are well fed, I must say. But we had to rebuild the huts and houses that the Vikings burned down. After you took care of them, we disassembled their ship for wood to help rebuild, but it takes time. Many men were killed during the attack.”

I must have been giving him a thoughtful look because he looked startled. “We’ll be fine, and you’re here now, so maybe you can help out a bit.”

Well, anyone would want to help out after hearing that story. I planned to do what I
